I bought this book as a Christmas gift for my grandmother. It was the last gift, and probably the best I’ve given her. The Christmas Ferrol Sams describes was the different and, at the same time, the same as the Christmases I experienced as a child. Christmas Gift is a loving tribute to long passed days and the memories our families created and passed on from one generation to the next.

Christmas Gift! by Ferrol Sams is a delightful, sentimental story about his Christmas memories growing up in rural Georgia during the Depression. He talks about all the family traditions and the special ones he is trying to pass on to his grandchildren like the yelling of “Christmas Gift!” As an original Northerner, I felt like a reader from the South might relate to it more than I did, but I still enjoyed it.

This story allows one to get lost in a time gone by, when life was slower and simpler. Family was treasured then and you would have given your shirt to get home to that family, especially at Christmas. Ferroll Sams really shares some of the most endearing traits of the South that will make Southerners close their eyes to day-dream about their past, and leave other readers wishing they could truly relate.

Each year, at Thanksgiving or near Christmas, we drive to a nearby town for the celebration of a family holiday. We take this audiotape with us. And after many years, it remains fresh and new. Ferrol Sams has not only the magic gift of story-telling, he also IS a storyteller. This is priceless.

Dr. Sams’ personal reminiscense of the holiday season delivers both rich detail of his boyhood in the South of the Depression and the timeless emotions of sharing love and joy that are the essence of Christmas. This uplifting book is short enough to read and re-read each Christmas season. It would be a fine gift for anyone who treasures family traditions, historical detail, and the wonder and excitement of the holiday season. Delightful!
